a workshop in choreography

a relationship experience

ATRIUM is a workshop in choreography.

It is an attempt at moulding the body in beautiful ways and discovering what works best.
It is an attempt at working with another, and understanding how to move past limitations.

When can we talk? was still in its inception, the piece stood in my mind as a tentative work of Dance Theater. It would involve a man and a woman, and would rely on precise choreography to tell a story of relationship, whatever it was. There would be lies, there would be love, two themes dear to me, and the work would explore the incidence of bodies as a reflection of connection, of communication. But before anything could be done narratively, I felt the need to produce something. I felt the need to create a sequence of movements, to be a choreographer and work on the shape of the body as a tool and powerful element of information. I wanted to experience the difficulties of crafting dance in a meticulous way, and discover if it was indeed a realistic task to take on. I could guess at methodology, but had no practical experience in the choreographic realm of Dance Theater.

ATRIUM gave me answers about physical form, and as a somewhat unexpected by-product, forced me to raise new questions about relationships, particularly as they apply to my person. I was faced with my shortcomings as a social being, and they begged me to reconsider my approaches to creative work. Through negative experience I was enlightened as to where I should go from where I was. I was introduced to the questions I had fundamentally always been asking myself.
